Molly Shock '75
College of Education

Molly Shock has two passions in life: family and education.

Shock grew up in Salisbury, Md., but decided she wanted a change of scenery and enrolled in what was then Towson State College as an elementary education major. At Towson, she met her husband Stephen, and after graduation the pair married and had two sons.

Instead of teaching in the classroom, Shock volunteered her time to the Rock and Read Program at Halstead Academy in Baltimore County for 10 years with her mother-in-law.

In 2002, after the death of her husband, Shock worked through her grief by volunteering and working with young children. However, she soon had an epiphany that she wanted to do more than just volunteer with at-risk youth--she wanted to give them real incentive to stay in school and eventually go to college.

The next year, through the Baltimore County Public School Education Foundation, Shock created a scholarship fund for the 26 students in the Halstead Academy kindergarten class. The scholarship will provide the children with financial support for any post-secondary track they choose. Following that, she endowed the Stephen K. Shock Scholarship through the College of Business and Economics and the Catherine Curran O'Malley fund in her honor at Towson, as well as several more scholarships at area high schools, including Towson High School, her husband's alma mater.

Shock has become an exemplary ambassador for Towson University--through her time and contributions. She remains involved in the Towson community, and is a member of both the TU Board of Visitors and Foundation Board. She is the current chair of the Capital Campaign Committee, Growing a University, and supports the university's Cherry Hill initiative. Perhaps most importantly, she has for several years traveled extensively to alumni events across the country--from California to Atlanta to New York--and spread the message of Towson University. Her speeches--whether at alumni gatherings or graduation ceremonies--share her story of pride and devotion to her alma mater.

And her good deeds don't stop there. Shock currently serves as the chair of the Central Scholarship Bureau that awards scholarships and interest-free college loans and grants to economically disadvantaged students in the State of Maryland. She is secretary on the Executive Board of the Baltimore County Public School Education Foundation, and also volunteers at Greater Baltimore Medical Center by helping prepare patients for CAT Scans.

In 2006, Shock was honored with the Spirit of the University Award and in 2008 was named one of Maryland's Top 100 Women by the Daily Record.

Her son Will graduated from Vassar College and is getting married in July 2011. Her son Richard is currently a Sophomore at Loyola College in Maryland.

Towson Heritage Celebration

The Alumni Relations Office is looking for our legacy students and alumni. Family connections are a part of Towson University’s success. Many of our current students are sons and daughters of Towson alumni, or they have legacy connections through their siblings or grandparents. We believe that these legacy connections are something to commemorate, so we are inviting all of our legacy alumni and students to a special “Towson Heritage Celebration.” Please let us know if you are part of a Towson University legacy family and we will get you the information about the event.

 TU 2010

Culminating the 2010 Plan

Towson University is a major producer of nurses and health professionals in the state and leads the University System of Maryland in health professions enrollment. The College of Health Professions (CHP) enrolls more students in bachelor's and master's level health care and sport-related programs than any other University System of Maryland institution. TU's Nursing Department has seen a steady increase in enrollment over the last four years among nursing and pre-nursing majors. Towson University continues to address the shortage of nurses in the region by expanding our programs remotely in Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City, Hagerstown and Harford, Montgomery, and Prince George's counties. Towson University's Master of Science degree program in nursing prepares graduates to assume key roles in the delivery of health care within a community-based nursing practice, in nursing education, or in transition from clinician to administrator. Towson University has Maryland's only combined B.S./M.S. program in Occupational Therapy and the state's only Gerontology program.
