Richard Hauf '93 Music, Education Major Richard Hauf knew early on in life that he wanted to be a high school band teacher. He also knew that you must practice what you want to teach, so practice he did during his years at Towson University! He played the saxophone in the TU Marching Band throughout his college career, and in his senior year was named the drum major for the band. The love for band that began at age 10 didn’t end there. After graduation, Hauf made good on his dreams when he went to teach at Havre de Grace High School - a position he has held for the past 17 years. He currently serves as the band director there, in addition to teaching such classes as Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, and AP Music Theory. The TU Marching Band has lead its members down interesting paths. Just last week the Towson community watched as the TU Band proudly marched in New York City as the only university marching band participant in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade! For Richard Hauf, participation in the Marching Band also lead to an interesting experience. He became involved with the Baltimore Colts Marching Band in 1984, shortly after the team left town, and joined the band’s rallying efforts to bring football back to Baltimore. The Colts Marching Band performed at stadiums and in parades all across the eastern seaboard to keep the Baltimore football spirit alive and to fight for a new team and new stadium. Hauf served as assistant music director for the band, and shortly after he left was pleased to see the NFL franchise return to Charm City. Looking back on his days at TU, Hauf said that he misses all of the hours he was able to devout to playing, and most importantly the friendships that were made. In the Marching Band at TU you "move in early, make friends early, and get involved early," which leads to friendships whose bonds are strong, since music majors spend so much time together with a hectic schedule of classes and practice. Hauf advises current music students to "devote as much of yourself as you can to your craft. The opportunity only comes around once, so make the most of it!" Currently married with three boys and living in Havre de Grace, Hauf continues to enjoy his teaching career at Havre de Grace High School, and would like to thank his TU saxophone instructor Dr. Briscuso, who was the biggest influence in his life. Adds Hauf, "I would not be where I am today without him."For more information on the TU Marching Band, please click here.

Campus Master Plan UpdatedAfter several months of campus and community forums and many hours of hard work and planning by our university planners, Towson University has updated the Campus Master Plan, the institution's long-term vision for its successful development of academic and student life buildings, roads, pedestrian pathways, utilities and landscapes to support these buildings. The 2009 plan update combines the framework of the 2003 master plan with the Towson University 2010 strategic plan goals following the these planning principles: build Maryland's Metropolitan University, develop the campus to the responsible capacity of the land, create a compact, connected and comprehendible campus, continue to develop a more sustainable campus, define clear edges and centers.
