Ellery Eskelin Tenor saxophonist and composer Ellery Eskelin graduated from Towson University with a degree in music in 1981. From there, he hit the road to pursue a career in music, landing in New York City where he began studies with saxophonists George Coleman and David Liebman. Debuting on the world scene (along with fellow Towson alumnus Drew Gress on bass) on a 1987 recording by the cooperative group Joint Venture, his success on the US and European touring circuit has grown from there – as a sideman with many of today's most forward thinking artists, as well as with his current working band including accordionist Andrea Parkins and drummer Jim Black. This group recently came back to Towson University and recorded the CD “One Great Night... Live” on TU’s campus! Eskelin has worked with a broad cross section of jazz, avant-pop and new music figures. His recordings have been named in Best of the Year critics’ polls in the New York Times, The Village Voice and other major jazz magazines in the US and abroad. He has received a Chamber Music America New Jazz Works grant in 2009 as well as a CMA French-American Exchange grant in 2007. In March of 2010 he will be an Artist in Residence for one week as part of the Bill and Helen Murray Jazz Residency program at Towson University. His live recording on TU’s campus was released just in time to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of his current band – what a homecoming! Baltimore Hebrew University (BHU) & University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute (UMBI) Last week Towson University announced two major additions to its academic and outreach offerings when the University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents unanimously approved a new partnership with Baltimore Hebrew University (BHU) and the restructuring of the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute (UMBI) Centers. This summer the 90-year-old institution, Baltimore Hebrew will transfer 55 graduate students, 7 faculty, and more than 70,000 volumes of the largest Judaica library collection in the mid-Atlantic region to the Towson University campus to establish the Baltimore Hebrew Institute at Towson University. Under the restructuring of UMBI, USM assigned the resources of the institution’s K-12 educational programs to Towson University allowing for enhanced outreach for students and educators in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics)-related fields.
