Elizabeth Dicembre TU Alumna Elizabeth Dicembre graduated in 1969 and embarked on a career that would revolve around education in many roles before bringing her back to campus to shape young readers in her position as the director of Towson University’s Reading Clinic. After receiving a masters degree in education from Goucher College, Elizabeth began a career in the Baltimore City Public School System and served as a classroom teacher, special education teacher, curriculum specialist and professional developer in the BCPSS. Elizabeth found she had a particular passion for reading education, and after receiving a doctorate from Johns Hopkins University taught reading courses at both Goucher College and Johns Hopkins University before returning to Towson University. According to Elizabeth, "the chance to give back to the institution that launched my career was too good to pass up." Now back at her alma matter, Elizabeth’s vision is to increase the impact of the TU Reading Clinic on campus and in the community. "The Reading Clinic truly changes lives - the lives of the teachers, children, and parents. As the Graduate Reading Program continues to grow, we will expand the reach of the clinic throughout the metropolitan community."The TU Reading Clinic serves two main goals. First, the clinic provides a practicum experience for teachers in the Graduate Reading Program. All of the clinic teachers are preparing for a reading specialist certificate and the experiences they have in the clinic classes give them many opportunities to fulfill the responsibilities of a reading specialist. Second, the Reading Clinic reaches out to the community to provide reading support for children and adolescents who are struggling readers. Supported by grants, the outreach efforts include taking the clinic off-campus to a Baltimore City public school each summer to provide services at no cost to the families, which has been the case in the Cherry Hill community for four consecutive summers. The success of the TU Reading Clinic is palpable. According to Elizabeth, "We hear regularly from parents that their son or daughter reads more often and enjoys reading more, has gotten a better report card, has moved up into a higher reading group, has gotten on the honor roll in their school, etc."For more information on Towson University’s Reading Clinic and the services offered, please click here or email Elizabeth.

President's 2009 Fall AddressOn Thursday, September 10, 2009 President Robert L. Caret delivered his annual Fall Address at Towson University's historic Stephens Hall Auditorium. In his seventh presidential address to campus, Dr. Caret focused on the accomplishments of the institution, its growth over the past six years, the anticipated culmination of Towson University 2010: Mapping the Future strategic plan, as well as his vision for the university over the next several years. Dr. Caret opened by saying: "Today I am ready to share with you, for the seventh time, my view of the state of our University and my thoughts on what the future may hold. A couple of months ago I passed the six year mark as President. In 2003, when I gave my first Fall Address, I had only been on the job for two months. Now, after six-plus years, I have learned a great deal more about the campus. I know we have accomplished so much and I also know these are good times for Towson University. Some of you will question… good times, how can he say that? I can say it by looking at what we have accomplished." To see the full text of the President's Fall Address to campus click here.
