  Tiger Spotlight

Bill Stetka '77
Director of Outreach and Development, Baltimore Orioles

Connections are important to succeed, as Bill Stetka learned when he transferred to Towson from the Naval Academy where he had been recruited for baseball. Born in Baltimore and raised in Forest Hill, he learned about Towson's Mass Communications program through Carl Runk, the TU lacrosse coach, and after a quick campus visit made his transfer to TU complete.

During his time here at Towson, Bill was involved in a variety of activities. He took his learning beyond the walls of the classroom through his time on the staff of The Towerlight (including 2 years as editor-in-chief), his work in the TU Sports Information Office and the University Relations Office, and his time spent on the field for JV baseball and intramural sports. According to Stetka, "The learning and working opportunities, especially outside the classroom, gave me experience I know I would not have gotten with my other choices." At Towson, Stetka was able to "work both on-and-off campus in professional settings that applied to my major, and to meet people who could help me in the communications profession."

While studying here at TU, Bill worked at the Baltimore News American newspaper and after graduation went on to work for them full time covering news and then sports. From there, he came back to work in PR at his alma mater, and eventually moved on to other roles within Towson University -- including director of alumni relations and the first director of athletic marketing. During his time at Towson, Bill kept a foot in the sports world, working part time as an official scorer for the Orioles home games in a position with Major League Baseball. Eventually the Orioles called him to join their PR staff, where he served for eight years as their director of PR before moving on to his current position as Director of Outreach and Development for in 2008. In this role, Bill has created a player alumni program, oversees the Oriole's archives and history, and works on numerous fan-related projects.

Looking back on his time at Towson, Stetka recalls that two professors and an athletic department staff member in particular pushed him to succeed -- Jim Kim in the Mass Comm department, George Friedman in the English department, and Peter Schlehr, the Sports Information Director at TU whose "guidance helped steer (Stetka's) career path immensely." It is his connection to Towson that draws Stetka back as a fourth-year member of the TU Alumni Association Board, where he also serves as the chair of the Community Relations and Outreach Committee (which recently was instrumental in the creation of the first Towsonopoly game!) "For me it is simple. It is because of Towson that I have enjoyed a long and wonderful professional career in communications." And he continues to share those connections. In his positions with the Orioles organization, he has hired many Towson students as interns, and often serves as a guest speaker in PR and Journalism Classes. According to Stetka, "Having gotten so much from Towson, it is easy to give back and see the benefits of my time."

 TU 2016

On Monday, November 8, Towson University President Robert Caret unveiled a new campus strategic plan, Towson University 2016: Building Within-Reaching Out, launching the university into its next phase of advancement. The TU2016 plan will not take the campus in a new direction from the previous 2010 plan, but rather continue advancing the university in five key areas: academic achievement; student experience, engagement and success; partnerships philosophy; resources for success; telling and selling our story. These five themes provide the framework for 22 goals designed to lead the university to continued success well into its 150th year - 2016.
